Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group - Video Games

In the video game industry, I believe in my own opinion that cellphone video games really are the star of the industry.  When you think about it, almost everyone has a “smart” phone loaded with the blackberry, android, or apple market.  These markets distribute video games free of cost or for the price of a dollar!  I believe that the video game industry is moving towards a more “portable” scene.  When you look at sales, the cellphone industry is really booming especially when it comes to the purchases of smart phones.  The “cash cow” would definitely be the PlayStation, simply because even though they are a great product, there have been newer releases of upgraded systems like the PlayStation 2/3.  The question mark, I would give to the Nintendo brand simply because they are a great brand, never out-doing Sony PlayStation in the types of games they sell, but still there is always a new “Nintendo” product coming out.  The dog would be the Xbox because Microsoft has shown no profit the way PlayStation has over the past few years.   According to David Riley of The NPD Group, Inc.  In the U.S., console and portable software experienced respective declines of 7 percent and 8 percent, while UK units saw respective declines of 6 percent and 25 percent.”  Also, a reason why people would be more interested in wireless devices (cellphones) for gaming is because you literally take your phone everywhere so it’s extremely convenient to be able to play fun and simple video games no matter where you’re at.  According to Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president of publishing at the Gameloft company, "Video games drive the mobile business because they're the best showcase of what these new devices can really do,"   Also, the reason I believe Microsoft Xbox360 would be the dog is simply because they can’t compete with the built in wi-fi PlayStation has to offer for online gaming without having to pay a monthly fee.
